POOL TABLE RUG SIZE GUIDE

Choosing a rug for a pool table starts with the table, but it doesn’t end there. Our Pool Table Rug Size Guide helps you choose the right rug based on your table size, room dimensions and the space players need to move and shoot comfortably. Learn how to measure your setup, how far a rug should extend beyond the table and which rug sizes work best beneath common 7-, 8- and 9-foot pool tables.

MEASURE THE FULL TABLE, INCLUDING THE RAILS

A “7-foot,” “8-foot,” or “9-foot” pool table is a size category, not an exact outside measurement. Measure the full length and width, including the rails and any projecting pockets. Tables in the same size category can have different footprints, so use your model’s dimensions when choosing a rug.

DECIDE HOW MUCH PLAYER COVERAGE YOU WANT

A compact rug can sit beneath the table and frame it visually, while a larger rug extends into the area where players stand and move. Aim for roughly 3 feet of rug beyond each table edge when you want generous standing coverage.

To estimate that size, add 6 feet to both the table’s outside length and width. Compare the result with the available rug sizes and check where the edges will fall during play.

COMPARE RUG SIZES

An 8′ × 11′ rug provides compact coverage beneath many home pool tables, but players will often stand partly or entirely beyond its edges. Coverage becomes especially limited at the ends of a 9-foot table.

An 11′ × 13′ rug gives players more surrounding space, particularly around a 7-foot table. Larger tables leave less rug at the ends.

A 12′ × 15′ rug offers the most generous coverage of these three options, making it worth considering for 8- and 9-foot tables as well as spacious setups with a smaller table.

CHECK YOUR STANCE AROUND THE RUG'S EDGES

Walk around the table and take a normal shooting stance at the ends, sides, and corners. Ideally, the rug’s edge shouldn’t repeatedly fall beneath your feet or leave you straddling two surfaces while lining up a shot.

Mark the proposed outline with painter’s tape suitable for your floor before ordering. A larger rug may place the edge farther beyond your usual stance.

ALLOW SEPERATE SPACE FOR CUE STROKES

Rug size is not the same as minimum room size. Even when a table fits comfortably on the rug, players still need unobstructed space for their cues.

Use your table manufacturer’s room-size chart for your table and cue length. Account for walls, columns, cabinets, and nearby seating, not just the room’s overall dimensions.

CHOOSE A FIRM, LOW-PROFILE SURFACE

Look for a rug that lies flat and provides consistent footing. Thick, loose, or shaggy surfaces can make movement less predictable, while curled edges can catch a foot as players circle the table.

If you plan to use a rug pad, choose one compatible with your flooring and discuss its thickness with your pool-table installer. Stable support matters beneath a heavy, precisely leveled table.

PUT THE RUG DOWN BEFORE INSTALLATION

Position the rug before the pool table is assembled and leveled. Center it beneath the planned table location and confirm the surrounding coverage first.

If your table is already installed, arrange the rug placement with a qualified pool-table mover or installer. Adding a rug beneath an assembled slate table can require lifting, disassembly, and releveling.

USE A DIAGRAM AS A STARTING POINT

The layouts show representative table footprints centered on nominal rug sizes. Check the actual dimensions listed for your chosen rug and pool-table model before ordering. Even a few inches can matter when the fit is close.

COMFORT AND STYLE WITH EVERY SHOT

A rug brings comfort and character to the space around your pool table, providing a softer, warmer surface for the standing, stepping, and circling that come with every game. It helps soften footsteps and room echoes, adds a protective layer over the flooring beneath it, and cushions the occasional ball that leaves the table. With enough coverage around the sides and ends, it also creates a welcoming place to play while framing your table as the room’s centerpiece, bringing together the colors, furniture, and atmosphere that make the space your own.
